Indonesia hosts inaugural AI Day to drive mining innovation
Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison has hosted Indonesia's first Indonesia AI Day for Mining Industry in Jakarta.
The event, which was dedicated to accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies within the mining sector, brought together industry participants, regulators, and international technology partners to discuss and explore the integration of AI and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
Organised under the theme "Navigating the Future of Indonesia's Mining Industry," the event assembled several hundred attendees from various fields. Its objective was to provide a collaborative platform where stakeholders could deliberate on how digital technology might drive increased efficiency, sustainability, safety, and security within Indonesian mining operations.
In his keynote address, Rosan Roeslani, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming and Head of BKPM, articulated the government's perspective on technological transformation within the mining industry. He said, "We appreciate Indosat's concrete initiative through the Indonesia AI Day for the Mining Industry. This initiative reflects the private sector's real contribution to industrial transformation through advanced technology. AI has become a strategic necessity to enhance competitiveness, particularly in the mining sector, and to support the transition to environmentally friendly energy. The government will issue policies on AI adoption and foster human capital development, involving all stakeholders."
The forum aimed to facilitate conversations on shaping a comprehensive roadmap for digital transformation, with discussions focusing on technology's role as a driver for sustainable growth and industrial resilience. Panellists and speakers examined how mining's digital evolution could enhance its overall contribution to the national economy and improve Indonesia's position in the global mining sector.
Representatives from a range of organisations participated in the main sessions, including figures from McKinsey & Company, Meutya Hafid (Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia), Rachmat Makkasau (President Director of PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara), and Tri Winarno (Director General of Minerals and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources). They presented perspectives on the nation's digitalisation roadmap and strategies for boosting competitiveness through advanced technological adoption.
Vikram Sinha, President Director and Chief Executive Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, outlined the company's approach to technological transformation in his remarks. Sinha stated, "As a company transforming into an AI TechCo, we believe the future of Indonesia's mining industry will be deeply shaped by technology adoption. Through Indonesia AI Day for Mining Industry, we aim to build an intelligent, secure, and sustainable ecosystem while ensuring this digital transformation drives equitable and inclusive economic growth."
According to Indosat, the initiative also marks a call to action for all stakeholders in the mining sector to enhance collaboration for the development of a robust digital ecosystem. The company emphasizes that cooperation between sectors, the use of advanced digital technologies, and the cultivation of relevant digital skills will be key to building what it describes as a smarter, more inclusive, and competitive mining industry for Indonesia on the global stage.
The event was framed as part of Indosat's broader commitment to supporting Indonesia's ambitions for artificial intelligence sovereignty, reinforcing previous statements made during Indonesia Day in November 2024. Indosat has indicated that it will continue to focus on accelerating digitalisation and technological innovation in key industrial sectors.
