Palo Alto Networks unveils advanced OT security solutions

Fri, 1st Nov 2024

Palo Alto Networks has introduced new operational technology (OT) security solutions in response to the growing cybersecurity threats faced by industrial operations.

The unveiling of these new capabilities highlights the increased vulnerability of OT environments due to the convergence of IT and OT systems as well as the ongoing digital transformation. Critical Industrial Automation and Control Systems are now more interconnected, which has inadvertently broadened the potential attack surface, making robust security measures vital. Palo Alto Networks has responded with solutions that include guided virtual patching powered by Precision AI, the Prisma Access Browser for remote access, and ruggedized Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) designed for challenging industrial environments.

According to the 2024 State of OT Security report, jointly conducted by Palo Alto Networks and ABI Research, a significant portion of industrial organisations—70%—have experienced cyberattacks on their OT environments over the past year. Notably, nearly a quarter of these attacks resulted in operational shutdowns, causing disruptions to business continuity.

Anand Oswal, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Network Security at Palo Alto Networks, commented on the situation: "The rise in the frequency and sophistication of OT attacks, often driven by AI, highlights the urgent need for robust, OT-specific security measures. Organizations must implement comprehensive solutions that ensure real-time visibility, end-to-end protection, and simplified security management. Palo Alto Networks OT Security solution, powered by Precision AI, secures both OT and converged IT/OT in a consistent way to combat these challenges and protect critical infrastructure."

The security landscape is further complicated by the evolving complexity and interconnectivity of OT environments. Sid Snitkin, Vice President of Cybersecurity Services at ARC Industrial Cybersecurity, stated: "Operational technology environments are becoming increasingly complex and interconnected, making them more susceptible to cyber threats. The ability to deploy AI-powered tools like guided virtual patching is a game-changer for industrial cybersecurity. It enables organizations to address vulnerabilities in real-time without the costly and often disruptive downtime that traditional patching methods would require. This approach not only reduces risks but also enhances the overall resilience of OT infrastructures."

Palo Alto Networks' new OT Security solution provides comprehensive protection across various environments, including networks, assets, remote operations, and 5G networks. One of the notable features includes the enhancement of remote operations via the Prisma Access Browser, which delivers secure, easy-to-deploy access for OT teams. This facilitates secure, immediate access for all authorised users, including contractors, and incorporates just-in-time access and session recording for critical workflows.

Another critical feature is the guided virtual patching, which allows security teams to address vulnerabilities swiftly without interrupting operations, thanks to the automation capabilities of Precision AI. This feature is particularly beneficial for securing legacy OT assets, which are often difficult to patch without risking disruptions.

Palo Alto Networks also introduced new ruggedized firewalls from the PA-400R Series, designed to operate in harsh environmental conditions like utility substations and factory floors. This model ensures continuous security and connectivity with features such as 5G connectivity and fail-to-wire capabilities, catering to remote sites and critical infrastructure.
