Equinix has signed a renewable energy power purchase agreement in Singapore with Flo Energy Singapore, its fourth such deal in the market in the past two years.

The solar agreement is expected to provide at least 11.5 megawatt-peak of renewable energy from industrial and commercial rooftop installations across Singapore. It also gives Equinix the option to expand capacity to as much as 50MWp over time.

With the latest contract, Equinix's local renewable energy portfolio in Singapore is set to reach a cumulative 215MWp by 2028. Its agreements in the market are expected to generate about 250,000 MWh of electricity a year.

The deal builds on a procurement strategy that already includes agreements linked to SolarNova 7 and JTC Jurong Island. It also broadens Equinix's supplier base by adding a private-sector counterparty as Singapore's data centre industry faces growing pressure over energy supply and emissions.

Singapore has become a key market for digital infrastructure groups because of its role as a regional hub for cloud, connectivity and artificial intelligence workloads. That growth has sharpened scrutiny of how operators secure electricity in a market with limited land, finite grid resources and strict sustainability targets.

Yee May Leong, Managing Director, Singapore, Equinix, linked the agreement to those broader pressures on the sector.

"Singapore's position as a trusted global AI and Digital Hub will be underpinned by digital infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable and built for the future," Leong said. "Our fourth PPA is a significant milestone that reflects the power of collaboration across Singapore's public and private sectors. As demand for digital infrastructure continues to accelerate, Equinix remains committed to supporting Singapore's position as a global digital hub while advancing the nation's sustainability goals."

Market constraints

Analysts have increasingly identified energy availability as one of the main strategic issues for data centre operators in Singapore. The latest agreement shows how companies are looking beyond standard supply arrangements to a broader range of procurement models.

"Singapore's data center sector is entering a new phase in which energy availability and sustainability considerations are becoming increasingly strategic. Equinix's latest agreement highlights how operators are diversifying their renewable energy sourcing models and collaborating with a wider ecosystem of partners. In a market shaped by land and grid constraints, multi-stakeholder approaches will play a critical role in supporting the continued growth and decarbonization of digital infrastructure," said Soon Chen Kang, Senior Research Analyst, 451 Research, S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Flo said the agreement aggregates electricity generation from rooftop solar projects across commercial and industrial sites in Singapore. The model reflects the challenge of adding new renewable generation in a country where large-scale land-based projects are difficult to develop.

"With Singapore's limited space, we need to think differently about how we make renewable energy more accessible for businesses with renewable aspirations. By bringing together generation from commercial and industrial rooftop solar projects across Singapore, this agreement demonstrates how we can help businesses support renewable energy at scale through our Data Centre Solutions, even in a land-constrained market," said Matthijs Guichelaar, Chief Executive Officer, Flo.

Equinix is the first customer under Flo's Data Centre Solutions offering, which is also being made available to operators in Australia through Flo's local business. The service includes fixed-price contracts, progressive purchasing, structured derivatives, renewable energy certificate matching and power purchase agreements.

Broader investment

The Singapore agreement sits within a broader Equinix energy programme across Asia-Pacific and other markets. Equinix now has more than 1,490MW of wind and solar PPAs under contract across 11 countries, including Australia, India, Japan and Singapore.

Alongside renewable procurement, Equinix has been investing in research and partnerships tied to Singapore's energy system. It recently announced a multi-year funding programme worth more than SGD $9 million for research into alternative clean energy sources, including geothermal energy and small modular reactors.

The company has also contributed SGD $450,000 to Singapore Management University's ResWORK programme. It has also said it will establish a co-innovation facility with the National University of Singapore at its upcoming SG6 International Business Exchange site, with work focused on areas including fuel cells, battery energy storage, liquid cooling and digital twin technology for data centres.

Those projects underline how operators in Singapore are moving beyond simple power procurement as they prepare for higher electricity demand from AI-related computing and data centre expansion. The latest Flo agreement gives Equinix another route to secure renewable electricity in a market where access to both capacity and low-carbon supply is increasingly contested.

Including the new agreement, Equinix said its renewable energy arrangements in Singapore are expected to produce enough electricity annually to match the charging demand of about 60,000 electric vehicles.
