Cogna appoints former Amazon AI leader Sam Ng as CTO

Wed, 22nd Apr 2026 (Yesterday)

Cogna has appointed former Amazon AI engineering leader Sam Ng as Chief Technology Officer, adding a senior executive with experience at Amazon, Google, Microsoft and GoDaddy.

Ng will lead the engineering organisation and oversee the technical direction of its AI platform as the business expands overseas and serves customers in sectors including water, gas and construction.

Most recently at Amazon, he held two senior engineering roles. In Amazon AI, he led teams responsible for the language, compiler, framework and tooling used to build training and inference workloads on the company's Trainium and Inferentia chips.

He also ran a 300-person engineering organisation at Kindle, where he worked on Kindle Scribe, a larger-format device with writing and note-taking functions, and Kindle Coloursoft, the first Kindle with a colour display.

Before Amazon, Ng was a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google. There, he led teams working on tools for knowledge workers in G Suite, the launch of Cloud Run for Anthos v1 in Google Cloud's serverless division, and consumer devices at Nest.

Earlier in his career, he spent four years at GoDaddy, rising from Director to Vice President of Engineering. He led its Global Platform Division, which built platforms serving more than 60 million domain names and supported the business through its stock market listing.

Ng began his career at Microsoft, where he spent nearly eight years working on the C# compiler and helping to build the Windows Azure Media Services team.

Engineering focus

The appointment gives Cogna a technology chief with experience across cloud software, AI infrastructure, developer tooling and consumer hardware. For a company selling AI software into industries with complex operating environments, that breadth is relevant as it refines products for customers managing field operations, industrial assets and compliance-heavy processes.

Cogna describes itself as an AI platform company working with complex industries. Its customer base includes organisations in utilities and construction, where software suppliers often face long sales cycles, detailed procurement requirements and the need to integrate with established operational systems.

That helps explain why senior engineering hires can matter for younger software companies. As demand grows, engineering teams are often expected not only to add new products but also to improve reliability, deployment and customer-specific implementation work across multiple geographies.

Such appointments often signal a shift from early product development to a broader scaling phase. In Cogna's case, Ng is expected to help guide that next stage as the business responds to customer demand and international expansion.

Ben Peters, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Cogna, commented on the appointment in a statement accompanying the announcement.

"Sam is a rare combination of deep technical ability and proven leadership at the highest levels of the industry. His experience building AI infrastructure at Amazon and scaling platform teams at Google and Microsoft makes him the ideal person to lead our engineering organisation into its next chapter," said Ben Peters, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Cogna.
