Adobe unveils advanced creative control in fresh Photoshop update

Wed, 24th Apr 2024

Adobe has revealed a new version of Photoshop, packed with powerful advancements in Generative Fill, enriched by the addition of Reference Image. This feature brings greater control to creators and instils a new sense of creativity for all Photoshop users. The enhancements stem from Adobe's Firefly Image 3 Foundation Model, offering major innovations towards the quality and control of this globally used image editing application.

The new tools Summary Image, Generate Image, Generate Similar, Generate Background, and Enhance Detail have been deeply integrated into the existing workflows. These deliver generative AI capabilities, enabling users to transform their imagination into imagery within seconds. Photoshop's Generative Fill and Generative Expand are now invigorated by the Firefly Image 3 Foundation Model, providing infinite possibilities for users to generate varied background, shapes, colours, styles, and scenes from scratch.

Ashley Still, Senior Vice President of Adobe's Creative Product Group, claims that these new features bring ideology and creation closer, making image editing more powerful and approachable. All of this is aimed at helping users realise their creative vision with greater ease and speed.

Other promising features include Reference Image, which provides a generative inspiration from user-selected images, helping create the outputs envisioned. The Generate Image feature can turn text into images directly within Photoshop for the first time, making the creation process faster and more intuitive. Generate Background eases the process of developing content that blends seamlessly into existing photos, while Generate Similar allows users to iterate variances for in-depth exploration of creative ideas. Enhance Detail, on the other hand, improves image sharpness and clarity.

In addition to those, Adobe Photoshop has introduced the Adjustment Brush for non-destructive image editing, Improved Font Browser for access to a vast range of fonts, and Adjustment Presets for quick changes to image appearance. These tools considerably expedite the design and creation process.

Adobe's Firefly was trained on Adobe stock content, ensuring the generated outputs are free from copyright or intellectual property infringements. It continuously reviews and moderates Adobe's standards and indemnifies IP for any Firefly generated content.

As per Adobe's commitment towards responsible innovation, transparency is maintained by attaching Content Credentials to Firefly-powered features in Photoshop. These credentials serve as a seal of authentication, informing whether AI was used in creation or editing. This policy adheres to Adobe's AI Ethics principles – accountability, responsibility, and transparency.

Digital content transparency is also supported by Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI). Being a global coalition of over 2,500 members, CAI aims to increase trust in the digital ecosystem. Users have quickly adopted Photoshop's Generative Fill and Generative Expand, with billions of images being edited using Firefly's generative features since its launch.

The latest release of Photoshop is available today in beta, with a broader release planned for later in the year.
