Vultr launches sovereign & private clouds amid global data concerns
Thu, 11th Apr 2024

Vultr, the privately-held cloud computing platform, has launched the Sovereign Cloud and Private Cloud. The move comes in the wake of global concerns about data sovereignty and the increasing volumes of business data being generated, stored and processed in a range of external locations from edge networks to IoT devices and public clouds.

A notable percentage of the globe's cloud workloads are presently overseen by a small ratio of cloud service providers in concentrated regions, prompting questions around digital autonomy and control over data hosted within these countries. This is of significant concern for Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia.

Enterprises, meanwhile, are faced with the challenge of adhering to a growing number of regulations that govern where data can be gathered, stored and deployed, while retaining access to core GPU, AI and cloud capacities in order to compete on a global level. According to Accenture, data sovereignty is a top issue for 50% of European CXOs when choosing cloud vendors, with over a third aiming to transfer 25-75% of data, workloads or assets to a sovereign cloud.

Vultr's Sovereign Cloud and Private Cloud are designed to empower government bodies, research institutions and businesses to utilise essential cloud-native infrastructure while guaranteeing that critical data, technology, and operations remain within national borders in compliance with local legislation. Simultaneously, Vultr provides these customers with access to sophisticated GPU, AI and cloud technology, crucial for today's leading AI innovators. This facilitates the creation of sovereign AI factories and innovations that are fully compliant, without sacrificing reach or scale.

By cooperating with local telecommunication providers like Singtel, along with international partners and governments, Vultr is able to construct and deploys locally managed clouds in any region. Vultr Sovereign Cloud and Private Cloud ensure data is stored domestically, so it is used solely for the purposes it was intended and is not transferred outside of the national borders or other in-country parameters without clear approval.

Vultr combines Sovereign and Private Cloud services with 'train anywhere, scale everywhere' infrastructure, including Vultr Container Registry, which allows models to be trained in one location but shared across multiple geographies. This gives customers the ability to scale AI models based on their individual needs.

"To address the escalating need for nations to control their own data, and to decrease their dependence on a small group of large global tech companies, Vultr will now deploy sovereign clouds on demand for national governments worldwide," said J.J. Kardwell, CEO of Vultr's parent company, Constant. "We are actively working with government bodies, local telecommunications businesses, and other in-country partners to provide Vultr Sovereign Cloud and Private Cloud solutions around the world, making way for clients to deliver fully compliant AI innovation at scale."
