Singapore Space Lab launched to boost commercial sector

SST Think Tank has launched the Singapore Space Lab, the country's first dedicated space innovation lab.
Supported by Deloitte and housed at IMDA PIXEL, the facility is intended to connect space companies with corporates, investors, government agencies and international partners.
The launch comes as Southeast Asia's space sector expands beyond public programmes into commercial activity. In a joint report, SST Think Tank and Deloitte said broader use of Earth observation data could add nearly USD $100 billion in cumulative GDP across Southeast Asia between 2023 and 2030. For Asia Pacific, the figure could reach USD $619 billion by 2030.
The Singapore Space Lab is designed to show how technologies developed for space can be applied on the ground. The organisers highlighted areas including Earth observation, satellite communications, geospatial analytics, positioning, navigation and timing.
Those tools are being pitched to sectors including agriculture, maritime, finance, logistics, energy, sustainability, urban planning and critical infrastructure. The lab is also intended to give local startups and technology firms a place to present their work to potential backers and customers.
Regional governments have also increased their focus on space. Singapore recently launched its National Space Agency, while Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam have all been strengthening institutions, satellite programmes, regulation and international links tied to the sector.
Against that backdrop, SST Think Tank is positioning the new site as an entry point to Singapore's commercial space ecosystem. It is meant to serve both domestic users looking for practical applications and overseas groups seeking partnerships in the region.
"Space is entering a new phase in Southeast Asia. The opportunity is no longer only about building space assets, but about translating space capabilities into economic value for industries on Earth," said Nicolette Yeo, General Manager, SST Think Tank. "The Singapore Space Lab gives Singapore's space ecosystem a physical front door. It is a place where startups can demonstrate their technologies, corporates can discover practical use cases, investors can see the pipeline of innovation, and international partners can engage with Singapore as a serious commercial space hub."
Demand link
Deloitte's role centres on linking space businesses with demand from companies outside the sector. Its Southeast Asia space practice is expected to work with organisations assessing whether satellite and geospatial tools can address challenges in supply chains, infrastructure, resilience, connectivity and risk.
The focus reflects a broader industry challenge: technical innovation has often outpaced adoption by mainstream businesses. By placing the lab inside PIXEL, the organisers aim to position space technologies alongside more established digital fields already familiar to corporate users.
"Space is becoming an operating layer for the modern economy," said Duleesha Kulasooriya, Co-Leader, Centre for the Edge, Deloitte Southeast Asia. "The next wave of value will come from helping businesses understand where space technologies can be embedded into existing operations, whether in supply chains, sustainability, infrastructure, connectivity or risk. The Singapore Space Lab creates an important bridge between space innovators and the industries that can benefit from their capabilities."
IMDA PIXEL is an innovation hub for startups, technology firms and corporates, with showcase areas and innovation programmes. It also sits alongside IMDA's Open Innovation Platform, which links corporates with a global network of more than 16,000 technology solvers.
That setting gives the space lab access to companies already exploring artificial intelligence, robotics, immersive media and other digital tools. The organisers said this could help businesses test combinations of technologies rather than assess space applications in isolation.
"The Singapore Space Lab expands the range of technologies and partners available through IMDA PIXEL, making it a place where emerging technologies are made accessible to businesses. By bringing space technologies into the same ecosystem as AI, robotics, immersive media, and other digital capabilities, we can help corporates and tech solvers explore new combinations of innovation that address real industry needs," said Alvin Kang, Head of Innovation, IMDA.
Startup platform
The lab will also support SST Think Tank's Growth Lab, an accelerator backed by Enterprise Singapore that helps domestic space companies expand overseas. Through the programme, firms receive support with market discovery, entry strategy, partner identification and regional business development.
Companies featured at the new facility include Singapore businesses working in high-reliability semiconductors, Geo-AI, laser communications, remote sensing and environmental intelligence. The site is intended for workshops, investor walkthroughs, corporate visits, community sessions and delegation tours.
Beyond Singapore, the lab is also expected to support the Asia Pacific Alliance for Space Trade Associations, or AASTA, an initiative led by SST Think Tank to deepen cross-border collaboration and help space companies enter new markets. Its membership includes trade association participants from Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
"The commercialisation of space will not happen through one company, one country or one sector alone," said Yeo. "It requires a connected ecosystem: startups that can build, corporates that can adopt, investors that can scale, and partners that can open doors across markets. The Singapore Space Lab is one of the key pieces of that infrastructure."
