Red Hat adds AI tools to streamline Linux management & upgrades

Yesterday

Red Hat has introduced a set of new management capabilities for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, aiming to embed artificial intelligence into the software lifecycle and further support container-native strategies for enterprise infrastructure.

The company has enhanced its Red Hat Insights tool with AI-powered package recommendations and planning features. These updates are intended to give IT teams a more comprehensive view of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux roadmap, supporting better decision-making processes around system maintenance and upgrade planning.

Red Hat Insights planning for Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers an overview of how both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and AppStream releases align with organisational needs. The company states that this can streamline the maintenance of supported systems and help IT teams create proactive upgrade strategies.

With these enhancements, Red Hat aims to reinforce customer confidence in the ongoing support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and AppStream versions, while promoting operational efficiency and awareness of the platform's development.

The updated AI-driven approach continues with Red Hat Insights image builder package recommendations, powered by Red Hat Enterprise Linux Lightspeed. This feature enables organisations to discover and evaluate packages with different functionalities that may suit particular tasks, refining their build processes early on for improved cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

The company asserts that these new Insights capabilities help solidify Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 as a stable platform to support enterprise IT in meeting the demands of increasingly complex and evolving environments.

Red Hat Insights advisor has also been packaged for use with Red Hat Satellite 6.17. This allows proactive recommendations to be delivered even in environments lacking public internet connectivity, which can be important for organisations operating in regulated sectors, like healthcare, or where connectivity is restricted.

Satellite stores Insights advisor rules and remediations within a container, keeping them updated so that recommendations can be processed and delivered locally without requiring data transmission to Red Hat. This configuration aims to provide the necessary control, operational efficiency, and management functionality for organisations with unique operational requirements.

Additionally, Red Hat Insights now features a proxy service. This is designed for enterprises with network restrictions and removes the need for direct internet access from every Linux host while still giving access to predictive analytics and security intelligence for Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Support for image mode in Satellite 6.17 further emphasises a container-native approach to managing Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments. Organisations can orchestrate their entire IT environment—including applications and the operating system—using consistent workflows and tools, whether managing containers or traditional operating system packages.

This integration is intended to help organisations accelerate container-native adoption, streamline workflows, and foster more cohesive environments across hybrid cloud, AI workloads, and data centre operations.

According to IDC, the adoption of generative AI and analytics in IT operations could increase productivity by 10% and result in USD $5 billion in economic and new business value. Red Hat is positioning these tools as suitable for organisations seeking to address infrastructure complexity and prepare for future innovation across any deployment scenario.

Mike McGrath, Vice President, Software Engineering at Red Hat, commented: "As hybrid cloud environments become more complex and AI ventures continue to grow, IT teams are continuously tasked with achieving more, moving faster and planning for the future amongst so many changing variables. To proactively manage Linux environments effectively, organizations need tools that empower them to make smart decisions precisely when it matters, based on expertise they can trust. We're delivering capabilities that hyper-focus on the ability to make resourceful, strategic choices, leading to more scalable, optimized and manageable operations for enterprises prioritizing innovation."

The latest features are available through Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions via the Hybrid Cloud Console. A technology preview of Insights advisor and image mode support is included in Red Hat Satellite 6.17.
