Nutanix wins Gartner nods across three key reports

Nutanix has been recognised in three Gartner Magic Quadrant reports covering distributed hybrid infrastructure, server virtualisation and container management.
The company was named a Leader in Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure and Server Virtualisation, and a Challenger in Container Management for the second consecutive year.
The reports focus on different parts of Nutanix's portfolio, including Nutanix Cloud Platform, Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure and Nutanix Kubernetes Platform. Gartner recognised Nutanix as a Leader for Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision in Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure. In Server Virtualisation, it placed the company highest for Ability to Execute and also recognised its Completeness of Vision.
Nutanix said the findings reflect demand from organisations managing increasingly complex hybrid cloud estates as they weigh artificial intelligence projects, application modernisation and data sovereignty requirements. It said customers want a more consistent way to run applications, data and infrastructure across on-premises, cloud and edge environments.
Thomas Cornely, Executive Vice President of Product Management at Nutanix, linked the distributed hybrid infrastructure result to those broader shifts in IT planning.
"Organisations are rethinking their infrastructure strategies as hybrid cloud environments become more complex and new requirements around AI, application modernisation, and sovereignty emerge," Cornely said.
"We believe our recognition as a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure reflects the continued evolution of the Nutanix Cloud Platform, giving customers a consistent cloud operating model with the flexibility and control to run AI workloads, applications, and data across the environments that best meet their needs."
Virtualisation shift
The server virtualisation recognition comes as many organisations continue to reassess their platform choices in a market that has seen significant change. Nutanix said its Cloud Infrastructure offering combines compute, storage, networking and virtualisation in a single operating model, with its AHV hypervisor based on KVM.
The University of Canberra offers an example of how that shift has played out in practice. The university said Nutanix now supports most of its on-premises environment following a migration that began more than a decade ago.
"Our Nutanix journey started more than a decade ago as a move away from traditional three-tier infrastructure, and today the platform supports around 90% of our on-premises environment. We've progressively moved from VMware to AHV, consolidated our core enterprise applications, and expanded the platform to support GPU-enabled teaching and research, self-service infrastructure, and hybrid cloud. What has worked particularly well for us is having a platform that can reliably support the University's critical systems while continuing to evolve with our needs in areas such as AI, automation, and cloud native," said Justin Mason, Associate Director of Technology Services at the University of Canberra.
The account points to a central competitive issue in the infrastructure market: whether suppliers can persuade customers to consolidate virtual machines, containers and newer AI-related workloads on fewer platforms. Universities, government bodies and large enterprises have all faced pressure to modernise systems while limiting operational disruption.
Containers focus
In container management, Nutanix was named a Challenger. The company launched Nutanix Kubernetes Platform in 2024 and said the product can run on its own or as part of Nutanix Cloud Platform across virtualised infrastructure, bare-metal systems, public cloud, edge locations and air-gapped environments.
Nutanix has also highlighted NKP Metal, which is intended to extend the same operating model to bare-metal Kubernetes environments. That matters because some organisations are trying to run containerised applications outside conventional public cloud settings, including in locations with strict regulatory or connectivity constraints.
Cornely said the container management recognition reflected a broader effort to bring older and newer workloads together rather than manage them in separate silos.
"As organisations modernise their applications and embrace AI, they need infrastructure that gives them greater simplicity and flexibility without creating new silos," Cornely said.
"We believe our recognition for the second consecutive year reflects the progress we've made with NKP, and our broader approach to helping customers run traditional, cloud native and AI workloads on a unified platform."
The three Gartner assessments give Nutanix fresh external validation in markets that have become more contested as customers revisit infrastructure decisions spanning virtualisation, hybrid cloud management and Kubernetes operations.
