Mitsubishi Electric becomes Linux Foundation gold member

Mon, 12th Jan 2026

Mitsubishi Electric has upgraded its membership of the Linux Foundation to Gold Member status, marking a deeper commitment to open source software development and industry collaboration.

The Linux Foundation said the move reflects Mitsubishi Electric's ongoing participation in its projects and activities. Mitsubishi Electric has held Silver Member status for more than a decade.

"We are thrilled to have Mitsubishi Electric upgrade to a gold membership with the Linux Foundation," said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director, of the Linux Foundation. "Their established history in nearly every industry - from the edge to automotive solutions, security to manufacturing - underscores the importance of collaboration in software development. We are eager to continue working alongside Mitsubishi Electric on open source, both in the Japanese market and beyond."

Open Source Focus

Mitsubishi Electric has published open source projects in recent years, including the Serendie Design System. The company described Serendie as a UI/UX design and development framework. It published the framework in November 2024.

The manufacturer also set up an Open Source & InnerSource Programme Office, which it refers to as OSPO/ISPO. The company said the office has promoted open-source best practices for internal development.

Mitsubishi Electric linked its open source work to a wider digital initiative. "Through our digital platform Serendie(*1) and open source, Mitsubishi Electric is transforming into an innovative company that creates new value through co-creation with partners, customers, and communities," said Shingo Oidate, General Manager, OSPO/ISPO, Mitsubishi Electric.

Oidate described the membership change as part of a longer relationship with the Linux Foundation. "We have been a silver member of the Linux Foundation for over a decade, but upgrading to a Gold Member reflects our firm belief in the importance of open source, and demonstrates our commitment not only as a user, but as an active contributor - expanding our ability to collaborate globally and deliver transformative value to society," said Oidate.

Project Contributions

Mitsubishi Electric has participated in Linux Foundation projects through engineering contributions, according to the organisation. The Linux Foundation said Mitsubishi Electric engineers have contributed to projects such as PyTorch.

The announcement also highlighted individual recognition tied to that work. Masahiro Hiramori received recognition as a PyTorch Ambassadors in 2025, according to the Linux Foundation. The foundation also said Hiramori received a Contributor Awards Nominee mention in two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025, for work connected to open AI technologies at the edge.

The Linux Foundation positions itself as a central organisation for open source collaboration across industries. It hosts projects and communities that cover operating systems, cloud infrastructure, security, data and AI tooling. It also runs events and training programmes for developers and enterprises.

Mitsubishi Electric operates across industrial automation, energy, transport and building systems, as well as consumer and automotive-related technology. The Linux Foundation said Mitsubishi Electric's industry footprint makes it relevant to a broad set of software efforts that link embedded systems, edge computing, and industrial environments.

Japan Summit

Mitsubishi Electric plans to discuss its open source contributions at Open Source Summit Japan in Tokyo. The company said it will speak about building a dual-focused OSPO in a traditional Japanese conglomerate.

The Linux Foundation said Mitsubishi Electric will share work and perspectives during the event alongside other organisations and developers active in open source projects.

"Their established history in nearly every industry - from the edge to automotive solutions, security to manufacturing - underscores the importance of collaboration in software development," said Zemlin.
