Google Cloud has opened a Singapore Engineering Centre, its first Google Cloud engineering centre in Southeast Asia.

The centre is co-located with Southeast Asia's first Google DeepMind research lab, linking cloud product development and AI research at a single Singapore site.

Google Cloud said the Singapore Engineering Centre will serve as its main product development hub in the region, bringing together software engineers working across AI, AI infrastructure, data, compute, machine learning, networking, storage and frontline support.

The operation is intended to build cloud and AI products in Singapore for global markets. Work includes developing data systems and infrastructure for low-latency and critical business workloads, integrating foundation models into broader cloud products, and building developer platforms and automation tools for hybrid and multicloud environments.

The move expands Google's investment in Singapore's technology sector, after the company outlined plans for the centre earlier this year. The project is backed by the Singapore Economic Development Board, which said it would deepen local expertise in AI and cloud engineering.

“Singapore is proud to host Google Cloud's first Engineering Centre in Southeast Asia. It will add depth and expertise to Singapore's diverse AI and cloud ecosystems by accelerating AI application development and shaping products for global deployment. We welcome Google's continued investment in the Singapore workforce with new core engineering and FDE roles presenting exciting opportunities for Singaporeans to build expertise with frontier technologies,” said Beng Kong Pee, Executive Vice President, EDB.

Regional role

Google Cloud said the centre marks a shift from the regional operations that often focus on support or post-sales work. Instead, engineers in Singapore will work directly with corporate customers to adapt core Google Cloud systems to business requirements during development.

The company described this as a closer link between research, engineering and customer deployment. By housing AI researchers and cloud systems teams in the same environment, it aims to shorten the path from model research to production software.

Early work at the site includes collaboration with Grab on real-time multilingual AI models and with DBS on financial workflows using AI agents. Google Cloud said those projects are helping shape products that can later be used more widely across its global customer base.

DBS framed the development as part of a broader effort to strengthen Singapore's position in AI. The bank said it expects to work with industry partners as it develops its own use of agentic AI.

“Singapore has the opportunity to be a trusted global AI hub, bringing together talent, technology and enterprise expertise to drive innovation and growth. The opening of Google Cloud's Singapore Engineering Centre is a welcome addition to this ecosystem. As DBS advances our agentic AI strategy, we look forward to collaborating across the industry to deliver value for our employees and customers in a safe and responsible manner,” said Nimish Panchmatia, Chief Transformation and Data Officer, DBS.

Customer deployment

Alongside the engineering centre, Google Cloud is expanding its regional Forward Deployed Engineer workforce. These teams work with customers to integrate systems built on Google products and help move projects from trial phases into live operations.

Engineers in these roles will build on tools and systems developed at the Singapore hub, giving the operation a dual function: core product engineering and customer implementation through regional technical teams.

For Singapore, the investment also has a workforce dimension. Google and the EDB pointed to new engineering and Forward Deployed Engineer roles as part of the expansion, linking the project to national efforts to build deeper local expertise in AI and cloud technologies.

The announcement comes as large technology companies continue to use Singapore as a base for regional engineering, data and AI work. Its concentration of multinational firms, financial institutions and digital platforms has made it a key market for testing software in sectors such as banking, transport and consumer services.

Google Cloud said that diversity was one reason for choosing Singapore. It said designing systems for Asia Pacific markets, where languages, regulation and customer demands vary widely, can help improve products for broader international use.

“A true test of engineering capability is building for the diversity and speed of Asia Pacific, which is why we chose Singapore. By anchoring the entire AI value chain in Singapore-from foundational research to core Google Cloud SEC productization and hands-on problem-solving and implementation via our Customer Engineering and Forward Deployed Engineer teams-we transform frontier capabilities, in close collaboration with our customers, into ready-to-deploy products at unprecedented speed,” said Moe Abdula, Vice President, Customer Engineering, Asia Pacific, Google Cloud.
