DataStax unveils Astra Vectorize for simplified AI embeddings

Thu, 23rd May 2024

DataStax, a company specialising in generative AI, has recently unveiled Astra Vectorize, a feature designed to perform embedding generation on the server-side. This innovative addition aims to simplify and accelerate the process for developers.

The new feature integrates with both OpenAI and Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service to streamline embedding generation. Organisations can now compare various embedding models effortlessly, drastically reducing development time. This integration enhances Astra Data API, allowing users to input raw, unstructured data, such as text or images, as part of an insert, update, or vector search operation. Astra DB will then automatically generate the vector embedding for that data.

Astra Vectorize aims to provide an improved developer experience by abstracting the complexity of embedding models from the application code. This allows developers to concentrate on the core business logic of their applications rather than dealing with intricate integrations.

"One of the frequent questions we hear from developers is around how to generate embeddings in a more simplified and cost-effective way. It’s clearly a pain point," said Ed Anuff, Chief Product Officer at DataStax. "With Astra Vectorize, the process is significantly simplified because embedding generation is happening at the database layer–where indexing has always traditionally occurred–leaving developers free to focus on actual application logic, rather than the intricacies of vector embeddings."

The native integration of Astra Vectorize with Azure OpenAI provides customers with the comprehensive security capabilities of Microsoft Azure. This integration offers private networking, regional availability, and responsible AI content filtering, all while running the same models as OpenAI. Additionally, Astra Vectorize includes out-of-the-box embedding generation services for both Azure and OpenAI platforms.

Asha Sharma, Corporate Vice President, Product, Azure AI at Microsoft, commented, "Vectorize represents the latest milestone in our partnership with DataStax, building on a longstanding relationship and multiple Microsoft and Azure integrations like Marketplace, Security, Fabric/PowerQuery, and Semantic Kernel. By simplifying the integration of Azure OpenAI Service into the DataStax RAG architecture, Vectorize streamlines embedding generation, reaffirming our joint commitment to empowering developers with advanced AI capabilities."

The positive feedback from initial testing underscores the feature's efficiency and utility. Ivan Koval, CEO of TechMove AS, noted, “Since beginning our testing with Vectorize, we've been impressed with the results. In just a short time, we've successfully created collections, loaded datasets, and executed queries, all yielding highly relevant results. This efficiency is promising for streamlining our processes and enhancing our overall workflow.”

Astra Vectorize will further facilitate generative AI application development, making it accessible and efficient for developers and organisations. DataStax's latest development aims to empower developers by reducing complexity and improving workflow, ensuring they can build smarter AI applications at scale.
