Cummins joins Emerald venture network for startup access

Cummins has joined Emerald Technology Ventures as a Limited Partner, giving the engine and power systems group access to Emerald's network of startups and emerging technologies.

The arrangement is intended to help Cummins identify technologies and companies that could support its strategy across power, mobility, energy systems, digital tools and industrial decarbonisation. The companies highlighted advanced mobility, electrification, alternative fuels, energy efficiency, power management and digital technologies as key areas of interest.

Industrial groups have increasingly turned to venture networks and startup partnerships to supplement internal research and development as customer demand shifts and technology cycles shorten. For manufacturers operating across transport, energy and industrial markets, these links can provide earlier visibility into products and business models that might otherwise take years to emerge through conventional development programmes.

The relationship gives Cummins another route to identify technologies that could address changing customer requirements across its businesses. It could also help the company assess practical applications, support pilot projects and create opportunities to collaborate with startups in Emerald's network.

The deal comes amid a period of change across Cummins' markets. Customers are navigating electrification, rising energy demand, digitalisation, tighter emissions requirements and the need for reliable power across a range of applications.

Emerald's investment activity spans several sectors that overlap with those pressures, including software-defined and connected vehicles, advanced powertrain technologies, batteries and electrification, clean and firm energy, energy efficiency, power management, and data centre and grid-related technologies.

Founded in 2000, the firm manages and advises more than EUR €1.3 billion in assets from offices in Zurich, Toronto and Singapore. It invests in startups focused on climate change and sustainability and has completed hundreds of venture transactions.

Innovation access

As a Limited Partner in Emerald's platform, Cummins is set to receive targeted access to startups in energy systems, electrification, digitalisation, mobility and industrial technology. The arrangement also includes sector research, tailored deal flow, links to Emerald's investment teams, and access to programmes designed to test and pilot startup offerings.

For Emerald, adding Cummins broadens its base of strategic corporate partners. For startups in Emerald's network, it creates a potential route to work with a large industrial technology company as they seek to validate new products in commercial settings.

The agreement reflects a broader industry pattern as established companies seek earlier engagement with younger technology businesses. In sectors exposed to emissions rules, power reliability concerns and the shift towards electrified systems, corporate investors have looked for ways to test ideas quickly without relying solely on internal development pipelines.

Emerald's model combines venture investment with direct engagement between corporate partners and startups. The structure is designed to help larger industrial groups assess emerging technologies against operational requirements and decide whether they merit trials or deeper collaboration.
