Connected vehicle cloud market set to hit GBP £573bn

Persistence Market Research expects the global connected vehicle cloud market to reach USD $240.4 billion in 2026 and expand to USD $572.6 billion by 2033.

The forecast points to continued growth in cloud systems used to manage data, software updates, and digital services in connected vehicles. The research firm expects the market to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 13.2% over the period.

Automakers are moving away from vehicle architectures in which functions are fixed at the point of manufacture. In their place, software-defined vehicle designs shift more control to software and centralised computing systems, allowing features to be updated remotely after a car is sold.

That change is increasing demand for cloud platforms that can handle over-the-air software deployment, diagnostics, communications, and the flow of information between vehicles and external systems. It also supports a broader move by manufacturers to keep adding functions and services throughout a vehicle's life.

Software shift

One of the clearest signs of that transition is the push towards standardised software and electronics. Honda and Nissan plan to jointly develop standardised electronic control units, operating systems, middleware, and vehicle-control software for next-generation vehicles planned from fiscal 2029 onward.

The arrangement reflects a broader industry effort to simplify development and reduce fragmentation in vehicle software stacks. As manufacturers build cars around common digital platforms, cloud systems become more important for distributing updates, managing fleets, and supporting new applications.

Artificial intelligence is also changing the role of connected vehicle platforms. Earlier connected car systems mainly covered navigation, tracking, diagnostics, and remote locking, but automakers are now exploring how cloud-based AI can analyse vehicle behaviour, identify maintenance needs, and tailor digital services to drivers.

Large volumes of vehicle data can be processed centrally, giving manufacturers a way to refine software models over time. That is drawing attention to the AI-defined vehicle, in which systems adjust to driver preferences, traffic, road conditions, and patterns of use.

Data value

The amount of information produced by connected vehicles is growing quickly. Data from cameras, sensors, battery management systems, powertrain components, infotainment systems, and telematics units gives manufacturers a broader base for engineering analysis and aftersales services.

Cloud platforms let companies collect and assess this information across large numbers of vehicles. The data can help identify recurring faults, improve design decisions, support predictive maintenance, and show how vehicles perform in real-world conditions.

India offers one example of how manufacturers are using that information. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has described its use of connected vehicle data covering billions of kilometres to support engineering analysis, quality improvement, AI-enabled diagnostics, and software-defined vehicle development.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles has also identified data governance and cybersecurity as core parts of its connected vehicle strategy. Those issues are becoming harder to separate from product development as more vehicle functions depend on software and remote connections.

Consumer features

Cloud connectivity is also changing what drivers expect from their vehicles. Remote monitoring, digital keys, real-time health information, personalised infotainment, navigation services, connected applications, and subscription-based features are becoming a more common part of ownership.

Mahindra illustrated that trend in August 2026 when it introduced a Google Cloud-based AI assistant in the BE 6 SPORTEQ. The system was designed to interact with more than 200 vehicle functions, including navigation, entertainment, climate control, cabin settings, and vehicle information.

These developments show how cloud-connected software is moving closer to everyday use in the cabin. For many manufacturers, connectivity is no longer treated as an optional add-on but as part of the broader digital experience attached to the vehicle.

Security demands

As cloud links become more central to vehicle design, cybersecurity is rising on the automotive technology agenda. Modern vehicles connect not only to cloud platforms but also to mobile applications, infrastructure, and third-party services, widening the range of systems that must be protected.

That has led automakers and technology providers to invest in secure over-the-air updates, encrypted communications, identity management, continuous monitoring, secure boot systems, and vehicle security operations centres. Data governance is also becoming more prominent as companies seek to use vehicle information while meeting privacy and regulatory demands.

The market outlook varies by region. North America is expected to remain a leading market because of its established cloud infrastructure, use of connected vehicle services, and close ties between carmakers and technology companies.

Recent moves in the United States underline that position. General Motors plans to roll out Google's Gemini AI assistant to around 4 million vehicles in the country through over-the-air updates while continuing to expand OnStar and vehicle data application programming interfaces for connected services and fleet uses.

Asia Pacific is expected to be one of the faster-growing regions, supported by its automotive manufacturing base, broader 5G coverage, rising electric vehicle adoption, and investment in connected and software-defined vehicles. China, Japan, South Korea, and India are all contributing to that momentum through spending on automotive software, connected services, and digital mobility systems.

As vehicles become more software-led, the cloud is moving closer to the centre of automotive development. The sector's growth will depend on how well manufacturers manage vehicle data, deliver remote updates, tailor services, and maintain secure digital connections throughout a vehicle's operating life.
