AMD & Sun Singapore partner for AI-based parking solution
AMD has recently announced that Sun Singapore Systems, the largest provider of smart parking solutions in Singapore, is implementing an innovative AI-based parking solution powered by AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC devices. This move aims to significantly enhance Singapore's smart city infrastructure with a range of advanced features.
The new system promises a long lifecycle due to the adaptable nature of FPGA-based AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoCs. These devices offer hardware flexibility, enabling the system to adapt to changing AI models, algorithms, and evolving demands and standards. This ensures that the solution remains relevant and effective over an extended period.
Key features of the system include high accuracy and low latency in vehicle license plate recognition, with a reported accuracy rate of 99%. This accuracy is crucial in facilitating features such as parking spot vacancy detection, parking violation enforcement, and other related functionalities with minimal delay. The adaptability of the new edge AI solution is expected to deliver innovative applications that enhance parking system features and services for users.
Sun Singapore's AI-based smart parking system utilises the PlanetSparks EdgeAI Box X7, which is powered by the aforementioned AMD devices. Additionally, Aupera Technologies contributed to designing and developing the FPGA firmware and AI vision solutions, which play a critical role in achieving accurate license plate readings. The combined efforts ensure the solution provides energy efficiency and real-time AI inferencing at the edge.
Eddie Ng, Senior Sales Manager at Sun Singapore, said, "With our focus on durability, low latency, and flexibility, the AMD FPGA-based edge AI solution, with its proven ability to support complex calculations on large amounts of data, was the right choice for us. The adaptability of the new edge AI solution will also allow us to deliver new applications to improve car parking system features and services for our customers."
Ms Phuay Li Ying, Managing Director at PlanetSpark, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasising the commitment to sustainable innovation. "PlanetSpark is committed to driving sustainable innovation with our Green & Agile solutions, providing unmatched energy efficiency and performance at the edge. We are delighted to work with AMD on this solution, which will bring significant improvements to the Smart Parking market," she said.
Currently, the technology in most of Singapore's electronic parking systems is over two decades old and lacks AI inferencing capabilities, which could deliver more advanced functions and features. The new solution aims to address this gap by providing enhanced reporting capabilities for car park operators through AI-generated data.
With the deployment of AMD's latest technology, Sun Singapore can now offer a comprehensive smart parking solution. This includes highly accurate license plate readings, updated parking spot vacancy detection, and parking violation enforcement. The integration of this technology is expected to significantly improve the functionality and efficiency of parking systems within the city.
Chetan Khona, Senior Director of Industrial, Vision, Healthcare, and Sciences Markets at AMD, highlighted the broader implications of this technology. "Sun Singapore and PlanetSpark exemplify the power of AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoCs ability to enable access to sensor fusion applications. By processing data from a variety of inputs, customers can leverage AI to enhance processes we take for granted across a variety of applications, be it smart city, manufacturing, robotics, and beyond," he said.
