AI traffic surges 30% as Philippines braces for bots

AI-generated internet traffic grew by about 30% between January and May 2026, according to Fastly. That was roughly 6.5 times faster than the growth in human traffic over the same period.

The figures point to a shift in how online services are accessed, as AI assistants, crawlers and agents send growing volumes of automated requests to websites, applications and application programming interfaces. The trend is raising questions for businesses about infrastructure costs, content access, site performance and security.

In the Philippines, that discussion is unfolding alongside a broader push to expand the country's use of artificial intelligence. National policy efforts have focused on AI adoption, digital infrastructure and governance, while the growth of machine-driven traffic adds a separate operational challenge for companies building digital services or publishing online content.

Fastly argued that businesses now need to distinguish between different types of automated traffic rather than rely on broad attempts to block bots. The key issue is not only whether a request is automated, but whether it comes from a trusted AI service, a useful web crawler or a malicious actor.

That distinction matters because machine traffic brings both benefits and costs. AI services can increase discovery of products, services and content when assistants summarise information or direct users to a source. At the same time, repeated automated access can increase bandwidth and computing demands, slow websites and reduce a company's control over how its content is collected and reused.

Traffic shift

Fastly's findings reflect a broader change in internet behaviour as users increasingly turn to AI tools instead of traditional search engines. Rather than typing keywords into a search box and reviewing a list of links, users are asking assistants to answer questions, compare options, recommend products and summarise information directly.

Each of those interactions can trigger several automated requests behind the scenes. They may include crawling pages for fresh information, retrieving content from application interfaces and checking sources before generating a response.

For website operators, that means a larger share of traffic may come from machines acting on behalf of users rather than from users visiting directly through a browser. The result is a more complex traffic mix, with different implications for service reliability, pricing and access controls.

Business response

For companies in the Philippines, the issue could become more pressing as AI adoption spreads across customer service, eCommerce, finance, media and public services. Organisations that depend on digital channels may need to decide which AI systems can access their platforms, on what terms and at what volume.

Those decisions could affect both costs and visibility. Restricting automated access too heavily may limit inclusion in AI-driven recommendations or summaries, while allowing unrestricted access may increase infrastructure strain or weaken content protection.

Fastly said traffic management is becoming a broader business issue rather than remaining solely a cybersecurity task. Companies may need policies that cover content usage, customer acquisition, digital performance and trust, alongside traditional concerns such as fraud and abuse.

The challenge is especially relevant for businesses that publish frequently updated information or operate application interfaces used by customers and partners. News sites, retailers, travel platforms, banks and service providers all face questions about how much machine access to allow and how to verify who is making the request.

Policy backdrop

The Philippines has been positioning itself as an AI-driven economy through a series of government initiatives. These efforts have focused on building infrastructure, promoting adoption and shaping rules for the use of AI across industries.

That policy direction may support stronger demand for AI tools in both the public and private sectors. But wider AI use also means the underlying internet infrastructure will need to absorb more automated traffic, making resilience and traffic filtering more important for operators of websites and online services.

As AI systems become a more regular part of how information is found and delivered, companies may need to take a more granular approach to internet traffic. Instead of treating all bots as a single category, they may need to separate useful machine interactions from harmful ones and decide how each should be handled.

Fastly's data suggests that adjustment may be needed sooner rather than later, with AI-driven traffic already rising far faster than human traffic in the early months of 2026.
