CelcomDigi’s MY5G SME workshop boosts digital skills in Sarawak
CelcomDigi completed its nationwide MY5G SME Digital Workshop in Kuching, aiming to accelerate digital adoption among entrepreneurs in Sarawak. The final event of the year-long series brought together small and medium enterprises with technology providers and funding organisations to discuss digital skills, funding access, and new routes for business growth.
Digital transformation
The workshop aimed to equip Sarawakian businesses with practical digital skills. Participants engaged in hands-on learning sessions covering digital platforms, artificial intelligence-enabled credit tools, analytics, and 5G-powered solutions. Local musician and entrepreneur Gideon Reed also addressed efforts to leverage digital channels for creative business growth and global audience engagement.
Funding access
Access to finance was a central topic, with several financial institutions including Bank Simpanan Nasional, SME Bank, CTOS, Funding Societies, and MoneyMatch participating. Sessions examined the use of transparent data and alternative financing models, as well as how these mechanisms can bridge the funding gap for SMEs in Sarawak and beyond.
Industry collaboration
The event featured a pitching platform, Arena Usahawan, where entrepreneurs presented their business cases directly to potential financiers. This approach highlighted opportunities for SMEs regardless of scale, focusing on how digital readiness could open up new growth opportunities. Business owners also networked with representatives from TikTok Shop, Boost Bank, and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation to explore partnerships and technology adoption strategies.
Sarawak SMEs
One element of the workshop was a discussion on combining Sarawak's cultural heritage with modern technology. Local company Leaves Food Industries outlined its journey in transforming traditional products into globally marketable brands by embracing authenticity and digital tools. CEO Alan Chai Ming Lun explained how the blend of heritage and technological innovation can create pathways to international markets.
Series impact
The MY5G SME Digital Workshop series engaged over 1,500 SMEs across the country, from Kuala Terengganu to Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, and concluding in Kuching. The initiative aimed to provide SMEs with practical frameworks, partner connections, and funding pathways for digital transformation and regional expansion.
"Sarawak is home to some of Malaysia's most enterprising SMEs. This workshop connected them with funding, digital platforms, and technology partners, enabling adoption of digital tools, access to funding, and new market opportunities. When SMEs grow, communities and economies benefit, and we remain committed to keeping Sarawak firmly in the digital value chain," said Ts. Afizulazha Abdullah, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, CelcomDigi.
